Watkins Glen load-in is less than two weeks away.  If you haven't already registered, please do so at http://DLBRacing.com  Each race has to be entered separately, but should only take about 30 seconds as your data is already on file.

Links: WGI weekend schedule, WGI paddock map.

We are in the North Paddock, which is big enough to handle our car count among the three series.

Scheduled load-in is 1pm Thursday, May 15th and everyone needs to go to the registration building up the hill before trying to get in the track.

Trailers and rigs should be able to enter the track via the tunnel (the Series rig is 13' 8" high and clears with no problem) and not have to wait for the track to close.  As at Road Atlanta, Series personnel will park you, so be patient.

We received positive feedback regarding the paddock look and parking at Road Atlanta, so let’s keep it up.

The Driver's meeting will again be written and available at the Series rig. There will also be a brief "in person" meeting for each Series (time TBD), for any last minute items and questions.

HP-Tech 2014 Line UpFt. Lauderdale, FL – HP-Tech Motorsport just concluded a Florida test for potential F2000 Championship Series driver and Petrobras scholarship winner Olin Galli. In addition, the team has added another F2000 Van Diemen and F1600 Spectrum/Honda under its stable. The 2012 F2000 Champions are looking forward to building on a string of podiums that closed the 2013 season.

At a recent event I was cruising the paddock and noticing all the new faces. It then occurred to me that even though the Series is in its 8th year many of our stakeholders haven’t been around that long, and many probably don’t know the Series staff. A brief introduction is in order.

b_200_150_16777215_00_images_stories_13season_staff_Mike_Rand.JPG

Mike Rand has been our Series Director from the get-go. Rand was born into some famous family in Greenwich. Since then he has been squandering his inheritance on racing formula cars and avoiding a “real job”. He attended his first drivers school in 1968 one week after reaching 21, the then mandatory age requirement. He has had a national license ever since. He thinks it would be just stupid to take up golf. To his credit, in pursuit of that passion, he has managed to be fired by some of the biggest names in racing. Along the way he has won a National Championship, brought VIR back to life, and put on the largest Formula Ford Festival in the history of mankind. Also to his credit, he is married to Tracy, a wonderful lady and possibly Connecticut’s best cook. There may be no more enthusiastic and knowledgeable fan of formula car racing in this country than Rand.

b_200_150_16777215_00_images_stories_13season_staff_Dave_Panas.JPG

Dave Panas has been our Chief Steward since the very first event. Dave was born in Peekskill New York, and graduated from Union College. He retired after 43 years working for Public Service Electric and Gas. He started racing in 1961. He won some State Championships in solo events driving a TR4A. Did some hill climbs and ice racing along the way. In 1968 he started racing FV in SCCA national events. In the late 70s he thought he would give back to the club and started getting involved in the steward program. This November he will pass his 50th anniversary as a SCCA member. Dave is an avid reader, and states that his favorite car was that TR3 he started with in 1961. He has been married 52 years to our next subject.

Lenore Panas was born in Mount Vernon New York. After graduating from Genesco NY State Teachers College (SUNY) she taught elementary school until recently retiring. This elementary school experience prepared her well for the role of being our Chief Registrar. She and Dave have two daughters and four grandkids. Lenore loves to garden when she isn’t traveling with Dave to race meetings.

b_200_150_16777215_00_images_stories_13season_staff_Patty_Baer.JPG

Brad and Patty Baer has always been our chief of Timing and Scoring. He is always teamed with his wife Patty or Bryon Prokopf (more about Bryon below). Born in Southern Illinois, he graduated from Southern Illinois University Carbondale and works as a structural engineer. Brad and Patty have been married over 33 years. Recently Patty retired from a career teaching in elementary school, mostly 3rd grade.

In 1986 Brad and Patty started going to races to watch Patty’s brother in a Sport Renault. That year Patty gave Brad a membership to SCCA as a Christmas present. Shortly thereafter they volunteered to help and within minutes found themselves in T&S. Immediately they saw ways to improve the systems, and within a short time were working at Trans-Am and World Challenge events. In 1993 they signed on with Dan Andersen to do T&S for the then USAC sanctioned F2000 Series. He and Patty have also been with our Series since day one.

b_200_150_16777215_00_images_stories_13season_staff_bp.jpg

Bryon Prokopf has been helping Brad in T&S the last few years on race dates that Patty can’t attend. Brad says he is only helping Bryon. Bryon’s family has always been involved in racing. Being sort of a math wiz, by the time Byron was 10 years old he was working in T&S for the St. Louis Region. He graduated from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and current works as a chemist in an environmental laboratory.

b_200_150_16777215_00_images_stories_13season_staff_Flagger_Phil.JPG

Phil Jerominski (Flagger Phil) has been our starter and flag chief since day one. Before that he also was the starter in the USAC sanctioned F200 Series. Born in Seattle Washington, Phil spent 13 years in the U.S. Navy and before retiring had 40 years experience as an intelligence analyst. He joined SCCA in 1985. He has a son and a daughter and two grandchildren. Now, retired in Florida he gets much more opportunity to ride his motorcycle and travel with wife Joan.

b_200_150_16777215_00_images_stories_13season_staff_Joan_Jerominski.JPG

Joan Jerominski holds two positions in our Series as needed. She assists with flagging, and is also our Assistant Registrar. She was born in Allentown PA and graduated from East Stroudsburg University. She spent 11 years in the U.S. Army and recently retired after 35 years as an intelligence analyst. She has been married to Phil for 28 years. Her favorite hobby is sewing and quilting.

b_200_150_16777215_00_images_stories_13season_staff_Mike_Eakin.JPG

Mike Eakin (aka Purple Frog) is the Technical Director for the Series. Mike was born in the swamp and somehow graduated from Florida State University. He became hooked on road racing when his brother took him to the Sebring 12 Hour in 1963. After completing 35 years as an Information Technology Director for various state government agencies in Florida, he started a construction business to keep paying for his Formula Continental racing addiction.

b_200_150_16777215_00_images_stories_13season_staff_Janice_Eakin.JPG

Janice Eakin (Mrs Purple Frog) works in many roles with the Series. You might see her along a guardrail shooting pictures, or at impound weighing cars. For many years she was the sole Series photographer. With no previous experience she started shooting pictures in 2007 to supply to the website, sponsors and competitors, while also building slide shows for the awards banquets. She captures the true flavor of the Series, especially talented in capturing the ‘personalities’ in pictures. After retiring from a career of 35 years in computer systems design, her favorite activity is spoiling her two granddaughters.

b_200_150_16777215_00_images_stories_13season_staff_Dennis_Valet.JPG

Dennis Valet joined us during the 2011 season as his brother Bill was winning the F1600 Championship. His photography is beyond being mere pictures, it is spectacular art. Born in Smithtown NY, Dennis graduated from Boston College, then went on to complete law school at Hofstra. He is now a practicing attorney on Long Island. His father started taking Dennis and his brother to races at Bridgehampton and put them into karts at age 5. Later, while watching his brother road race Dennis picked up a camera to have something to do at the track, the rest is history. Soon his work was being featured on Apexspeed, getting rave reviews from viewers around the world. His favorite car, so far, is his current black BMW 335.

b_200_150_16777215_00_images_stories_13season_staff_Rick_Kreiselman.JPG

Rick Kreiselman has been our Assistant Scrutineer for seven years. Born in Columbus, Ohio and raised in south Florida, Rick has a degree from Florida State University in system engineering with minors in math, chemistry and physics. He worked as a database and software designer for pharmaceutical oriented companies, and now works for himself in software design. Rick crewed several years for the Purple Frog leading up to a very interesting week at the Nationals at Mid-Ohio. Originally we drafted him to specialize in maintaining software compliance within the Zetec ECU and tech inspection. Not one to sit on his hands, he sat right seat for pace car communications for 4 years and then took over Grid and tire compliance, among other duties. I’m guessing his favorite car was his ’63 Fairlane with the HP289, it certainly got into a lot of trouble as a teenager. He also got a lot of experience rebuilding transmissions at that time.

b_200_150_16777215_00_images_stories_13season_staff_Sarah_Bonnier.JPG

Sarah Bonnier is one of our Assistant Stewards. She wears many hats. On a given race day she may be in the pace car, on the grid, walking pit lane, at the quack shack, or in the tower. Born in Skaneateles NY, she is truly a “Finger Lakes Girl”. She has an Associates Degree in culinary arts from Johnson and Wales, and a bachelors degree from Denison University. She started hanging out at SCCA events at Watkins Glen in 1985, and hasn’t stopped hanging out at race tracks since. She says it is unfair to have to pick a favorite track, much like a parent can’t pick a favorite child, for each track has its own story. At first she said her favorite car was her 1984 Audi Quatro Turbo Coupe, then decided it was her 1963 356 Super 90 that is painted per her decision, a custom lipstick red produced by Chanel.

b_200_150_16777215_00_images_stories_13season_staff_Greg_Rickes.JPG

Greg Rickes in 2012 became a very welcome addition to our Series as our Announcer both on audiocast and the track public address system. Greg has been writing and talking about cars since his first article was published in his high school newspaper, back in the Age of Aquarius. While waiting for his own racing career to blossom, he started announcing SCCA club racing events at Thompson and Lime Rock Park. And while the driving career never quite got the green flag, he’s been the “Voice of Lime Rock Park” for more than 40 years. These days he lists his occupation as “motor sports journalist & commentator”. Prior to moving to motorsports full-time he spent 36 years as a college administrator at the State University of New York at Albany. Ranked among his cherished motorsports memories are attending the Skip Barber Racing School at Bridgehampton, finishing tenth in the season points in the mini-modified class at Albany-Saratoga Speedway, and winning a special winter race for media members on the frozen surface of Round Lake in upstate New York.

b_200_150_16777215_00_images_stories_13season_staff_GR.JPG

Glennon Reidler (aka GR) is one of our Assistant Stewards. Born in St. Louis, Mo., but packed in a carry-on bag at 9 months old, he moved to Florida with the rest of his family where he has lived since. He is a business executive with a concentration in human resources. Although he did attend college, he seems more proud to tell everyone that he holds a Masters from the School of Hard Knocks. In his case it’s more like the school of HardRock! (Think AC/DC, Hendrix, Sabbath, RATM, Metallica, etc….). Introduced to racing in a serious way, he joined the SCCA in 1994. GR has raced FC in SCCA regional, national and pro series, and has held a variety of SCCA licenses. He even worked the second F1 race at Indy in F&C. His favorite track is every single one he has raced on! His favorite car was his ’00 Dark Blue F2000 Van Diemen.

b_200_150_16777215_00_images_stories_13season_staff_Monty.JPG

Monty Mathisen is our communications director – overseeing the websites and all public relations. He joined the series in 2009 and has built up a motorsports marketing business since. He splits his time between NYC and “on the road.” He has been into racing since “forever,” thanks to going to every conceivable short track and road course within reasonable driving distance growing up. Free time is spent watching more racing or driving his Speed3. Since his arrival, instead of reading about out events the next day on Apexspeed, you can now listen in live and follow on RaceMonitor. This year he is also producing really neat videos of the race weekends. Does he sleep?

b_200_150_16777215_00_images_stories_13season_staff_Billy_Lloyd.2.JPG

Billy Lloyd is our “Chief of anything no one else wants to do”. Apparently tireless and full of energy you’ll see him just about anywhere doing something that has to be done. He was born right down the road from Lime Rock Park in Sharon CT. He now lives in Salisbury and works as a construction manager. His favorite track is Watkins Glen. He loves to travel and arrives at many of our events riding his BMW K1200RS. At first he said his favorite car was a 60s Fiat 600D, but then with a wink he changed his mind and declared it to be a 1968 VW Kombi.

Why look at F1600?

Why race in F2000?

Why race Atlantic?

Under 18 years old and Watkins Glen International

SO YOU THINK YOU WANT TO GO FORMULA CAR RACING!

Below is information both about what you need to know to go road racing and what you can expect at a FRP event if you’ve never attended one.

You have a number of choices, but I would probably first go to a professional driver school. This accomplishes two things; gets you in the seat of a racecar on a racetrack and gives you credit towards a racing license (see ‘getting started’). You need nothing in the way of equipment at this stage. While expensive at first look, they really are very economical in the scheme of things for what they give you. If you have your own car, or access to a car, you can go to a SCCA driver’s school. This is fairly time consuming and why the professional school is almost always the best option. Once you’re successfully through the school and have the license, you have some decisions to make.

I should note that if you are very experienced in karting, and can prove you have enough hours driving a race car somewhere, we the Series can, at our discretion, issue you a provisional SCCA Pro license which will allow you to compete under our observation.

First, you have to buy your personal equipment; a driver’s suit, helmet with tear offs, gloves, shoes, HANS device, arm restraints, hood, long underwear. While you don’t have to buy the most expensive products out there, there are some minimums. Buy name brand products from a reputable supplier. The helmet has to be Snell rating SA 2010 or newer, but since the SA 2015’s are available, buy nothing less. Make sure it fits, and I recommend sticking with the most popular brands in case you have to go buy a visor or tear offs at a track somewhere. The HANS; while the Series only requires a ‘SFI rated head and neck device’, I know of almost nobody who has anything other than the HANS. Most modern formula cars favor the #30 model. The suit can be two or three layer but must meet SFI minimum ratings- no single layer suits meet the minimum. Again, stick with a recognized brand such as Sparco, Alpinestars, OMP, Simpson (understanding there are other good suits). I highly recommend long underwear, even with a suit that doesn’t require it- this is from a hot personal experience.

Next, you have to decide if you want to own your own car. Are you mechanically inclined? Do you have tools, a trailer capable of transporting the car and something to pull it? There is a host of equipment necessary to campaign a F1600 or F2000 at this, or really any level. If you don’t have any of the above, even if you are mechanically competent, I would strongly advise using a prep shop in some capacity the first year until you get a chance to see what its all about. The prep shop can help you buy the car, show you how to prep and maintain it, and give you invaluable information on the subtleties of these cars and the Series. The shop will have all the necessary tools and equipment, so you can see what you’ll have to buy in year two.

Third (or first!), and maybe something you think you know but may reconsider with experience; what are your goals in racing? Are you planning to drive racecars for a living? How are you going to get to the Indianapolis 500, F1, whatever? Do you have a source of money? Racing is expensive and we have some hard numbers of what you’ll most likely have to spend to become a competent professional driver. Focus on the goal, map your path, and spend the money wisely. You have to start somewhere and F1600 or F2000 have been an early rung for many of the top drivers in motor sports, so we know it is a proven path.  If you are doing it for fun (or addiction), and that’s what the vast majority of us do, any of our three series will offer great satisfaction and reward.

In the early years you need seat time, seat time, seat time; and then you need competition, lots of it. A relevant statement I heard from an ex Formula One driver was that great talent will almost always rise to the top and be discovered, regardless of where it comes from. This means you do not have to spend huge amounts of money in the early years on marketing, public relations, and racing in the ‘right place’ to be seen. Spend it on seat time and the fiercest competition you can find. If you’re good, you’ll be noticed. Then you’ll have to follow it up with racing in the ‘right series’ and the surrounding high profile event circus; that’s where you will have to spend the real money, and that’s at least two years away, if not more.

SO YOU STILL WANT TO GO RACING...

GETTING STARTED with Formula Race Promotions

If you want to attend a race at an FRP event for the first time, call us (855-722-3377 ext. 701) and tell us who you are.  We’re not a big bureaucracy, and the process is quite simple.  Below are some highlights and information to help you along the way.

ENTRIES

2019 entry fee for F1600 and F2000 is $1,195 per weekend, Atlantic is $1,650.  There is no Series Registration fee.  This covers the price of your Pro license and unlimited crew licenses for your team, the required series decals for your car, series required crew uniform and driver suit patches and other administrative costs.

LICENSE

We are sanctioned by SCCA Pro Racing and require some form of racing license (we cover cost) as well as SCCA membership for all competitors.  We honor many other organization’s licenses for at least one weekend and can easily facilitate getting you a SCCA Pro license based on it.  If you do not have one of the recognized licenses, are coming directly from karting, or have been away from racing for a while, we will need to see a resume and based on that may grant a provisional license so our staff can observe you on track.  Those coming directly from karting, or with long layoffs we urge you to get in a car either on some test days or at racing school lapping days before coming to one of our events.  Talk to us, or email us with specific questions.

REGISTRATION

Let us know you are coming ahead of time.  Actual entry takes place on http://Motorsportreg.com is self-explanatory and easy to use. If you have a question about the site, call us and we’ll talk you through the process.

TEAM PRESENTATION

Driver’s suits are required to have Hoosier, SCCA Pro and at least one of the FRP Series logos on them.  Competing sanctioning body logos are permitted (but frowned upon) on suits. Crew shirts are necessary; they don’t have to be fancy.  We’re very reasonable, but also need to have Hoosier, SCCA Pro and at least one of FRP Series logos on them. This is important as we have contractual arrangements with our sponsors and sanctioning body, who expect this.  All required patches are available for the asking.  For those who want to use embroidery, we have logo files available on our website.

RADIOS

Like many other series, we require a crew member to have a radio capable of listening to the Series frequency and be able to communicate information to the driver.   There are any number of ways to do this, and in this day and age, very reasonably priced scanners.  The Series is contracting with Speedcom Communications and will use digital radios starting in the 2019 season.  Analogue radios will work for at least 2019, but we highly recommend digital.

RIG PARKING and TECH INSPECTION

When you arrive at the track, we will park you.  It makes it easier on everybody.  We will perform tech inspection at your trailer (what a concept).  Our tech is primarily safety related as we expect you to bring a legal car to the weekend.

TIRE DECLARATION

You do not have to order tires ahead of time:  We are supplied by the Hoosier factory, not a dealer, and they will bring enough stock to supply the paddock based on the published entry list.  You must use Series specific tires exclusively once qualifying starts, and you can use only Hoosier tires throughout the weekend.

Our tire declaration process works in two steps and properly declared tires are required for qualifying and races. First, is listing the barcode numbers on a tire declaration sheet. Sheets are available at the Series trailer throughout the weekend or on the website under the competitor tab and should be returned to the Series trailer by 6:00 p.m. Friday night. Once we have your tire declaration sheet, one of our Tech officials will come to your paddock and stamp your sidewalls

We generally have a driver’s meeting early in the weekend and attendance by all drivers is mandatory.  It will be on the posted schedule and usually on a chalk board at the Series trailer.  There are also written driver’s meeting notes available at the Series rig and emailed to all entered drivers; read them as they have track specific information that may not be covered in the meeting.

WEEKEND PROCEDURES

Try to be early to the false grid.  For practice, the lineup is first come, first served.  For qualifying, you will be gridded according to season points so if it’s your first time, plan to be at the back of the grid. Please review our flagging rules in Article 1.6.16 in the FRP PRR 2019 before the event.

At the end of a qualifying or race session, certain cars will be sent to impound.  It is usually the top six and one at random, but that is not always the case. Specifics will be announced over the series radio channel at the end of each session.   It is always a good idea to have a crew member meet you there with some basic tools.

Fuel is designated for each class of car before the weekend and is detailed on our websites.  It is most likely at the track, but may not be depending on circumstances (especially 93 pump).

Do not hesitate to talk to any of our staff at any time with questions. We are here to help.

Why look at F1600?

F1600, often called FF or Formula Ford, has a rich history in both the USA and around the world. The first F1600’s were introduced to the USA in 1969 and have been continuously raced ever since. It is a non-winged purpose built single seat race car which is well known to be a great training ground for career minded drivers, and a highly competitive class for all participants. It has a reputation for being one of the most economical classes, and with the addition of the FIT motor from Honda to the class, the cost saving just got better. Many of the top drivers in the world started in FF, including Aryton Senna in Europe and Michael Andretti in the USA.  Current alumni of F1600 include Aaron Telitz (Indy Lights), Jake Eidson (Pro Mazda), Garrett Grist (Indy Lights), Colin Thompson (PWC), Neil Verhagan (Red Bull development driver).

Why race in F2000?

F2000 is a formula that was developed in England in the mid 1970’s and has gone through a couple of evolutions to become one of the best rides for the money in road racing. It is a step up from F1600, with the addition of more horsepower, larger tires and aero considerations in the form of wings and diffusers. The suspension geometry of a modern F2000 is as sophisticated as anything out there, and offers great training for drivers, engineers and mechanics. It is a formula, not a spec car, so there are numerous chassis designs, multiple motors allowed, and room to make a better mouse trap.

At the same time, there are enough restrictions to keep costs in check. With all of that, the F2000 Series routinely has top ten qualifying time spreads measured in tenths of a second. The pedigree of top drivers who learned their trade in F2000 include Dan Weldon, Patrick Carpentier, Paul Tracy, Aryton Senna, Sam Hornish, Jr. and more recently, Connor Daly (Indy car), Kyle Marcelli (PWC), Santino Ferrucci (IndyCar).

Why race Atlantic?

Formula Atlantic cars are not for the faint of heart or beginners.   They are sophisticated, 300 hp race cars capable of speeds in excess of 175 mph.  If you can drive an Atlantic car well, you can drive an Indycar.  They are also a natural progression from F2000 and possibly F1600.  These cars have highly developed aerodynamic packages and are very sensitive to setup changes and driving techniques, making them an ideal teaching platform for both driver and crew seeking to go to the highest levels of motor racing.

Under 18 years old and Watkins Glen International

First, you have to have a valid, acceptable competition license. See the information about how to get your license. Watkins Glen (WGI) is unique among all the tracks we go to in that they require you as a driver to sign the liability waiver as an adult. In most states and New York where WGI is located, that is age 18. To do so under that age, you must become either partially or fully ‘emancipated’ or its equivalent, and be able to prove it to WGI.

We have a system set up to use the laws of Indiana where a partial emancipation is available for the specific purpose of motor racing. It requires some advance planning, paperwork, a video conference with an Indiana judge and about $3,000 or a little less. We have done this for many drivers; it’s routine and proven.  Be aware that not doing it through this Indiana process has resulted in rejections by WGI.
